WELCOME TO  GREAT PLAINS
 CUB DAY CAMP '97!

Here's a photo visit to our 1997 Cub Day Camp. Over 700 boys experienced many adventures in
their week-long camp at Bob Woodruff Park in Plano. The first two of three camp sessions were
interrupted by a storm that came through Monday evening, tearing down tree limbs and forcing
us to cancel Tuesday's activities and relocate to the meadow for the rest of the week. To see the
results of the storm (which hit right after the campers had left the park), click on
STORM.

Camp activities for Wolves and Bears included Crafts, Games, Nature, and Scout Skills. Webelos
Scouts worked on several Webelos Pins, including Engineer, Artist, Craftsman, and Readyman. All
Scouts had opportunities to try BBs and/or Archery, and attend special events each day. Our theme
was
"Scouting Around the World", and daily special guests and activities connected us with a different
county where Scouts are found across the globe. Dedicated volunteers put in countless hours of time
planning and producing this highlight of the Scouting year. Please stop by the
CREDITS page so you
will know who gave so much with willing hearts and hands , because it's
"For The Boys"!

Each session opens with the pledge of allegiance, led
by one of the dens. This was Wednesday morning
at Camp Wichita, when we met in the meadow
after the storm had closed Tuesday's camp.
The dens gathered at their own Den Area each day,
where lunch and den projects were shared together.
Ready on the Firing Line! BB shooting is always a
highlight of each scout's camp experience.
In addition to learning the safety rules and skills of
archery, scouts had the opportunity to see several
different kinds of bows demonstrated.
Webelos listened carefully and helped to list the jobs
Engineers do. The giant catapult was a fun way to
learn about design and function.
Away she flies! Redshirts fired tennis balls and
water balloons to demonstrate the catapult's
firepower.
Becky Middleton was well qualified to teach us about
Bike Safety, having judged bike races and run beside
her husband's bike as he carried this Olympic Torch!
Here's another "special guest" - Tori Johnson with big
sister Theresa. Campers from 1996 will remember
Tori as a camper-yet-to-come - she was born in
August to Camp Director Debbie Johnson.
Out in the meadow, the Academy of Classical Karate
presented solo and group exhibitions of their skills.
For the twilight camps, Martial Arts America gave
us a glimpse at their routines and karate abilities.
Who's that scary space cadet? It's Program Director
Karen Earl in full fire rescue gear! Now the scouts
know who to turn to in an emergency.
The Plano Fire Department helped teach First Aid
and Safety to the scouts, and gave us a tour of their
engine.

Cubs at Camp Sunset play at "Saxons and Dragons",
Tug-o-War with a British flair!

It's the Shirts vs. the Skins at "Ultimate" frisbee
at Camp Sunset.

"Crackers and Whirrers" are fun noisemakers Cubs
learned to make at the Crafts station.

A proud Cub introduces his new "Porcupine Planter"
made from a potato. Watch them grow!

Busy, happy, and safely watched, the little brothers
and sisters had a good time in camp's "Papoose
Land", in the shade of the park's trees.
What would we do without our "Redshirts"? These
older Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts volunteered their
time to be the extra hands the staff needed to make
the camp run smoothly - wherever duty called.
Many Webelos families stayed for the campout, with
tired Webelos heading to their sleeping bags after a
long week of camp and a night of skits and songs.
At the Webelos Campfire on Friday, members of the
Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow held a solemn
ceremony to retire with honor an old American Flag.

If you were a camp participant, we hope you had a wonderful week, and will be back next year! If you are just
visiting our Web Page, please let us know you were here, and where you are from. If you didn't attend camp this year, but you will be a Great Plains Cub next summer, please plan to join us for Cub Day Camp 1998!
Information will be coming out at Cub Leader Roundtables, beginning with the Fall Program Preview on
August 19th. See you there!
